Grisham, Knight & Hooper and its predecessor firms have provided
representation to Tennessees creditor community
for more than 50 years. The firms founder,
Horace L. Smith, Jr. established his practice in the
early 1950's in the fields of commercial and consumer
collections, litigation and bankruptcy.
In 1979, Arthur C. Grisham, a
graduate of the University of Tennessee College of
Law, and a partner with an insurance defense law
firm, Goins, Gammon, Baker, Robinson & Grisham,
joined Smith. Their firm was named Smith &
Grisham.
In 1985, Grisham's former partner,
Thomas L. N. Knight, also a University of Tennessee
College of Law graduate, joined the firm, which was
renamed Smith, Grisham & Knight.
Smith's name was deleted from the
firms letterhead when he was appointed to a
state court judgeship later in 1985.
In 1988, Walter E. Hooper became
Counsel to the firm, enriching it with a wealth of
knowledge acquired during a distinguished legal
career spanning more than 50 years.
In 1989, Walter's son, J. B. Hooper,
became associated with the firm upon his graduation
from the University of Georgia College of Law. He
became a partner in 1995, and his name was added to
the firm's letterhead.
Neither the firm
nor any of its members are certified as Civil Trial,
Consumer Bankruptcy, Business Bankruptcy, or
Creditors Rights Specialists by the Tennessee
Commission on Continuing Legal Education and
Specialization.
